I’ve just gotten back from Influence Forum 08, run by the team from MediaConnect. The event was great, with a lot of good sessions and people.

I had the opportunity to tell the assembled crowd of over 50 of Australia’s top tech journalists about Hiive and our Affinity and Gravity products in a 10 minute part of the Demo session.

The response to the session was really positive, and I’m looking forward to building on the great relationships formed at the weekend in the Hunter as we get closer to our launch.

Interestingly, this was one of the first conferences I’ve participated in where there’s been a real time, active twitterstream. I’m sure most of the presenters probably benefitted from not knowing what was going on while they talked; thankfully for me, the WiFi mostly died just before my presentation, so the feedback wasn’t too brutal. Anthony has a great post on the effect of this real-time back-channel, and its affect on the experiences of the participants, on his PocketMojo blog. If you’re interested, you can follow the twitter stream from the event at search.twitter.com.

Thankyou to Phil and the MediaConnect team for running a great event and inviting me to participate!

Just a short post to start off our blog and provide a sneak-peak of Hiive Systems, our yet-to-launch Australian Enterprise 2.0 startup.

What?

Hiive Systems has two products that help service businesses to run better by improving coordination, collaboration and consistency.

  1. Affinity, for better managing client relationships; and,
  2. Gravity, to help businesses to better manage tasks and workflows.

These products are 100% web-based, and are already being used in organisations ranging from state government and ASX listed organisations through to small and medium businesses.

Why?

Information Technology has helped to reshape the business environment, making it easier for people to work together more easily and efficiently, be they colleagues, clients, staff, constituents or stakeholders.

While IT has done amazing things for many industries, the benefits haven’t been evenly spread. Areas where things are easy to measure, barcode or otherwise give an ID code to have tended to benefit from IT a lot more than business processes where people, knowledge and service are key. It makes sense for computer programmers to prefer to solve problems with maths, but these ‘softer’ areas of our economy are much larger, and generally more influential than traditional areas like manufacturing and primary industries.

Because solutions to the problems of coordination, collaboration and consitency are harder to achieve, many industries in the service sector are left to their own devices, solving problems in a “home grown” fashion with little more than email and spreadsheets as tools.

At Hiive Systems, we recognised these shortcomings in our own business experience, and set about solving them. We also recognised that other solutions for managing clients and tasks (CRM and Project Management software respectively) were either focused towards product-centric operations, or required so much effort and discipline to use that they often failed in the real world. So, we developed Affinity and Gravity, and now we have hundreds of users delivering better service to their clients, managing their work with their teams and benefiting from coordination every single day.

Who?

Hiive Systems is made up of a small, rock-star team of developers and implementers. Technically, our developers have deep experience in online application development, including expertise in databases, object oriented development and managing server infrastructure. We’ve also got a great UI developer who loves all things AJAX, CSS and DOM, as well as strong management and client implementation experience. You’ll get to meet us more in person here on the blog in the months ahead.

When?

Hiive is being spun out from Internetrix, a company with over 8 years of online development and client service experience. Due to launch in October 2008, Hiive is coming to the market as a startup, but with a track record, clients and revenue.

Where?

Hiive is Australian based, but we’re offering our products initially in the United States, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zealand – as well as Australia of course! Geographically, our development team works out of Wollongong, NSW, a city about an hour south of Sydney, a University town with a proud technical and software engineering history.

How?

Our products are licenced on a per-user basis, and can either be hosted or installed. The implementation process is quick and easy, with a simple signup form from our website getting things underway, where we’ll set you up with a trial. From there, you can either get running with help from our video demos and documentation, or we can help with a full range of implementation services, including training, data migration and even customisation.
